Great Cities

The Great Cities mission of UIC means that a core commitment of the university is excellence in research on urban issues and social problem-solving in the tradition of land grant universities. Consequently, there are many educational opportunities on our campus that complement and enrich those available in the Division of Community and Prevention Research. Many students and faculty participate in educational offerings provided by UIC’s NIMH-funded Prevention Research Training Program in Urban Children’s Mental Health and AIDS Prevention, a multidisciplinary pre- and post-doctoral training program with over 60 affiliated UIC faculty from six colleges. Doctoral students are also encouraged to take advantage of multidisciplinary learning opportunities by enrolling in relevant coursework in, among others, the Departments of Sociology, Psychiatry, Disability and Human Development, Political Science, the School of Public Health and the College of Education. In addition, a number of organizations and institutes have active ties with our doctoral program. Some of these include: The Great Cities Institute, the Center for Research on Women and Gender, the Center for Urban Educational Research and Development, the Institute for Government and Public Affairs, the Office of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Concerns, the Health Research and Policy Centers, the Center for Literacy, the Institute for Juvenile Research, the Chicago Public Schools, and the Illinois Department of Human Services.
