About
Daniel Cervone is Professor of Psychology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He earned his PhD in Psychology from Stanford University in 1985. In addition to his time at UIC, Dr. Cervone has been a visiting faculty member at the University of Washington and at the University of Rome 'La Sapienza," and has been a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. He currently serves on the editorial boards of Psychological Review and the European Journal of Personality, and recently completed a term as Associate Editor at the Journal of Research in Personality.
Statement of Research Interests:
My primary research is grounded in a model of the overall design and operating characteristics of personality systems, or a model of personality architecture. The Knowledge-and-Appraisal Personality Architecture (KAPA) model provides a set of principles for delineating distinct psychological subsystems that contribute to the overall coherence of personality functioning (Cervone, 2004). In empirical research, my colleagues and I have addressed the ways in which knowledge-and-appraisal systems contribute to cross-situational coherence in personality in both basic research domains and in health-relevant applications (e.g., Cervone, 1997; Cervone, 2004; Cervone, Orom, Artistico, Shadel, & Kassel, in press/2007; Shadel & Cervone, 2006). In theoretical work, my students, colleagues, and I have worked to explain the implications of the KAPA model and related social-cognitive formulations for questions of personality assessment (Cervone, Shadel, & Jencius, 2001), person--situation interaction (Cervone, Caldwell, & Orom, in press), the psychology of aging and life-span development (Cervone, Artistico, & Berry, 2006), self-regulation (Cervone, Mor, Orom, Scott, & Shadel, 2004; Cervone, Shadel, Smith, & Fiori, 2006), and the fundamental goal of formulating explanatory models of personality functioning (Cervone, 2005, in press).
I also have co-authored graduate (Caprara & Cervone, 2000) and undergraduate (Cervone and Pervin, 2007) textbooks in personality psychology, and have co-edited three additional volumes in the field (listed below).
