Dr. Shankman is an associate professor of psychology and a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the UIC 2015 Rising Star Research of the Year in Social Sciences.

In his primary research, Dr. Shankman uses a multi-method approach to explore the relation between mood and anxiety disorders, the nature and course of depression and other basic questions in affective science. His research attempts to bridge the gap and integrate clinical and epidemiological approaches with neuroscience and psychological methods. He is an established researcher funded by the National Institutes of Health, with studies funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

He received his bachelor's in psychology and musicology at Northwestern University. He completed his doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of New York at Stony Brook.
